B. Smith the former model turned mogul, has been coming on and coming on for years, and is inevitably being compared with Martha Stewart.

In contrast to Stewart, Barbara “B.” Smith has chosen Bed Bath & Beyond as her vehicle for selling her various items. She has been continuously adding to her extensive assortment of quilts, sheets and tableware and is going into rugs this spring. 

Smith also peddles her wares on QVC as she sells a line of jewelry there.

Jura Konciua reports that she “has her own cornbread-and-muffin mix for Betty Crocker and gives lifestyle tips on New York 's WBLS-FM radio station. In addition to her 11-year-old Cajun-Creole Washington restaurant, B. Smith's, she has eateries in New York City and the Hamptons . She recently was named a spokeswoman for Absolut vodka. Her husband and business partner, Dan Gasby, says they are in discussions for collections of B. Smith furniture and clothing, and possibly a health and fitness cookbook.”

Smith “was the first African-American woman to appear on the cover of Mademoiselle magazine, in 1976, and she is an entrepreneurial icon to many younger consumers.”

She credits her parents with a lot of her success as she compares them to being the original Bob Vila and Martha Stewart. She has come a long way from her Everson, Pa. home; many are glad she did.
