More TV viewers not only tuned in to watch “American Idol” they did it in droves by an almost 2-1 margin – 28.3 million compared with 15.1 million for the Grammy Awards.

To add insult to injury, not only did “American Idol beat them, but ABC’s thriller “Lost” also handily beat them garnering 18.8 million viewers competing head-to-head. The Grammy’s did top the 9 to 10 p.m. slot, but the average over the duration of the broadcast was less than “Lost.”
Once “Idol” was over the Grammy’s did a little bit better. For the entire three-and-a-half hours its viewership was at 17 million people.

These figures were provided by Nielsen Media Research.
This year’s Grammy’s was the least watched going back to the 1970s according to Nielsen’s records.

It had to be quite a disappointment for CBS and the combative music industry as they filled the show with an array of stars that at one time would have produced big numbers.
a
They had Bruce Springsteen, Kelly Clarkson, Mariah Carey, Paul McCartney and Kanye West among many others. Even Sly Stone made an appearance.
a
About the only boasting that the pros can make is that it is the first time in seven shows this season that less than 30 million people tuned in to watch the “Idol.” Small Consolation!
a
I don’t think that this is just a blip on the entertainment map. This has been a trend for a while, the continuing drop in ratings of not only the Grammy’s but other entertainment award shows as well.
a
We’ll keep a watch on this. People, I think, are turning on some on of the on-air antics and demagoguery that has accompanied many of these types of shows in the past. The future behavior of the recipients, I believe, will tell where this is all going to end up.
