Comcast Corp. announced on Thursday that it would sell some of NBC's more popular television shows through its video-on-demand service beginning in May. It will include such hits as "Law & Order" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."
The deal will offer not only the top prime-time and late night programs from the NBC network, but will also make available other shows from USA, Bravo and Sci-Fi cable channels.
Comcast digital cable subscribers will receive access to the prime-time shows by the midnight after the broadcast for 99 cents each. The other offerings of daytime and cable shows will be presented at no extra charge.
Currently Comcast has more than 7,000 programs available at anytime to watch through VOD, which is happening because more viewers are demanding that these be made available at their convenience.
CBS earlier in the year made a deal with Comcast to offer their content for VOD also. They are looking to include all the major networks soon.
I think that these are good business moves by the companies as many of them use their DVRs because of the static programming that no longer serves the needs of the great majority of workers. If consumers can watch them when they want, it takes away the need to use one. I wonder how TIVO is going to respond to this growing threat? Do you have any thoughts on this?
