The romantic comedy "Failure to Launch roared to the front in theaters across the nation. It debuted at number one with $24.6 million. It stars Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker.
In other interesting new, two remakes came in second and third over the weekend. Disney's family offering "The Shaggy Dog," which stars Tim Allen came in at number 2 with $16 million, and Fox Searchlights's horror film "The Hills Have Eyes" was number 3 with $15.5 million.
"F
ailure to Launch," a Paramount release, knocked off Lionsgate's "Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion," from number 1, which had been the number 1 movie the last two weekends. "Reunion" slipped to number 5, taking in $5.8 million to bring its gross up to $55.8 million.
This shows how much the critics know as the reviews for all three movies were very weak. Still they were about $8 million less than last year's top three for the same weekend, "Robots," "Be Cool" and "The Pacifier," which had a total of $64.4 million combined.
Among the top 12 movies of the weekend the gross was $92.4 million, which was down over 10 % from last year. Hollywood is going backwards again as it is down 1% over last years disasterous 7% slide from 2004 according to Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations, a box-office tracking company.
