Tyler Perry’s comic drama “Madea’s Family Reunion” continues to resonate with fans as it withstood a slew of new releases to stay on top of the weekend box office figures. Tyler Perry is also the creator of “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.”

The film from Lionsgate took in $13 million in the second weekend of release to bring its total gross to $48 million.

It outdrew the Bruce Willis police thriller called “16 Blocks,” which opened up at number 2 taking in $11.7 million. The premise of this show from Warner Bros. is that a NYPD detective is attempting to escort a star witness to safety from a lockup to a grand jury session 16 blocks away.

Perry’s “Madea’s Family Reunion,” was shot for a total of $6 million and is about a bunch of comedic domestic hijinks that happen as a family is preparing for a reunion.

The multi-talented Perry not only wrote and directed the film but also played three different roles including the infamous, overweight, pistol-packing matriarch of the family Madea. He also played that role in last year’s “Diary of a Mad Black Woman.”

The weekend overall was down from last years sales during the same time period by $83.8 million, down 23 percent.
