SMS and TV: Some tips for success

smskk.jpgWhile there is never a magic pill for any business that will give them the one big thing that will take them over the top, there are some common business skills that go across all industries, that greatly enhance the company's growth and profits.

In the case of merging SMS with TV, there have been a number of failures that we can learn from.

Recently there was an analysis of a number of SMS-TV shows that didn't get any benefit in their ratings as result of the merger. The greatest problem was found in content development itself. Just going interactive doesn't mean that it automatically guarantees success. There are still strengths that must be adhered to that will make the chances of success much higher. Here are a few:

Parts put together well. When offers to vote are given or SMS displays, they must coincide with the show's content.

A well-trained show host. While this may sound obvious, in the area of SMS, it must be done subtly and with impeccable timing. But more than anything else it must be done. The host's job will be to prompt, in the right way and time, views to participate.

Easy to read displays. Those of us on the Internet know this but when TV is involved and their are SMS displays, they must be large and clear so that viewers can know without a doubt their choices before them. They want their input counted correctly.

Big enough rewards. The broadcaster of a show needs to offer big enough prizes or rewards so that they are compelling enough to attract and keep viewers.

Test, Test, Test. Believe it or not there have been a number of shows that have aired with very minimal testing and as a result had a great many problems, including succeeding. One way this can be minimized is to have the production and technical departments work in the same area together until you've got all the glitches out of the system.

This is no different than any other business. When you come right down to it, it is taking care of the customer and making sure their experience is as smooth as possible. That along with compelling content and great rewards, should ensure a great possibility of success.
