With the direct-to-video concept becoming more known and used as a tool by Hollywood, it is now going to a new level, going beyond the sequel stage, into full-blown branded video premieres.
Warner Home Video senior vp theatrical catalog Jeff Baker says that one new series will be
"a little bit Alfred Hitchcock meets 'The Twilight Zone."' The "Raw Feed" series will present films that will be the edgy type of thrillers brought to the big screen.
The first film that will be produced by Warner will be called "Rest Stop," which will tell the story of a young couple being terrorized while traveling across the country. Production on it begins Monday. John Shiban is the writer of the story who also is the co-executive who produces the WB Network's "Supernatural."
Warner's marketing strategy will be centered on the Internet and streaming content to Web sites and portable devices.Baker also commented that this is the first time that Warner Home Video has ventured from its own library product to create a series of movies.
"We believe there is a market for direct-to-video if the content is compelling and interesting," Baker said. "It's really a question of how you portray them in packaging and marketing and creating awareness."
