At the National Association of Broadcasters Convention, Fred Young, senior VP of news at Hearst-Argyle commented that blogging is a venture that is far too risky for a Tv station to enter into.
"Blogging is wonderful, but it scares me," he said. "We have a responsibility to do it right, to do it accurate, to make sure it's correct. The beneficiaries of the bloggers, whether we leave them on our stations or our sites, because those are extensions of our stations, will be the lawyers. There are things said in blogs that aren't always correct."
This is coming from a panel that included Dan Rather, I'm not kidding. Here is straight-shooter Rather's comments on blogging: "But blogs need more accountability, I have no difficulty with blogs as long as it's labeled as such, like an op-ed piece or a letter to the editor. At its best, it can be a useful edition, but I am concerned about accountability."
As all of this is being said I can see Obi-Wan Kenobi in the background waving his arm saying that blogging is inaccurate, blogging scares you, blogging needs more accountability, blogs are like a letter to the editor, Dan Rather has credibility and Broadcasters are superior.
Of course we have the Wizard from Oz telling us not to look behind the broadcasting curtain.
Every time these traditional industry pundits try to scare off people from bloggers and the democratizing of media, the more you realize how fast they are becoming marginalized, not the bloggers.
