The huge and growing social-networking site MySpace.com is reportedly working on transforming its user-generated content into television programming according to MediaPost. Even now MySpace is growing at 230,000 new member a month to augment its current 77 million participants.
Senior VP of marketing for MySpace.com, Shawn Gold wouldn't reveal any details about which programs or networks would be entering into the agreements but simply said that "there is stuff in development" and MySpace is "not limited by the News Corp. family."
This change in strategy is extraordinary when you look at it. It seems to be a spin on the advertainment model and using the popularity of user-generated content to increase it draw even more.
Can you picture yourself in a commercial or part of a TV show built around or influenced by what you have individually created or created with some friends? MySpace can, and understands the powerful viral of effect of the users contacting all their friends and relatives to see their contributions being broadcast. It should be a great hit.
