Video game revenues for 2005 were approximately $30 billion, and are predicted to explode to $65.9 billion by 2011. In comparison, total box office receipts worldwide were only $23 billion, down close to 8 percent from the year before, according to Nielsen Entertainment/NRG.
The line that separates video games and movies has become completely blurred. In the past, Hollywood has considered the gaming industry as a distant cousin, licensing its top producers to the gaming studios to be adapted to the gaming systems and were quit profitable.
With Microsoft's Xbox 360 already here and Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii coming soon, it is predicted that the gaming industry is going to surge ahead to greater prominence.
While in the past the gaming industry was lower on the scale, now, with Hollywood faltering, they are the ones that need to be extra careful in their deals.
For example, if they put a lot of time into developing a game based upon a movie expected to do well, and it flops, they have lost everything they have spent time on. And in the poor track record of Hollywood lately, it is a huge risk to take.
One of the big hopes that Hollywood has is that the tie-in factor between the games and films may give their movies a longer run and keep interest up in them. In other words: they are relying on the gaming industry now to help them to be profitable.
Interestingly enough, the demographic for the games, males between 18 and 49 (44%) for the most part, are many times getting their first taste of the entertainment on the gaming system. From there they are deciding whether they want to see the movie connected to it or not. The quality of the game offered is the determining factor.
It's amazing to see this turnaround in the entertainment industry. Imagine in a few short years the gaming industry being over twice the size of Hollywood.
