The Indianapolis 500 race which will be run this weekend is going to be geared up for interactivity through ABC Sports and ESPN.
Both of these Walt Disney Co. (DIS) subsidiaries will have a plethora of multimedia coverage of the race on Sunday.
Along with the regular coverage, ESPN and ABC will provide "side-by-Side," which will show a split screen of the race during the commercial breaks.
ESPN 360, the broadband arm and Web portal, will offer the fans the option of choosing between six car cameras and also receive a live video feed from the team radios.
"That service will also be offered on ESPN’s new interactive-TV channel, available through EchoStar Communications Corp.’s Dish Network direct-broadcast satellite service.
"And ESPN will offer a global-positioning tracker for each car provided by Sportvision Inc., along with “Real-Time RaceCast,” a new premium online service offering real-time telemetry data, engine specifications and race leaders. RaceCast is available for $9.95 for the Indy 500 only or $24.95 for the entire Indy-car race season."
I really like how they're doing this. The more a company can offer a customizable experience, the greater inroads into a customers heart and mind they'll achieve. Those serious fans are going to eat up the ability to go deeper into the race experience. This is being done right. Should we start calling this Indy 500 2.0?
