Paul Simon hit out at MTV, saying that their focus on image, rather than talent, has hindered many quality musicians from having great careers.
According to Simon he also said that he would have never been able to make it today in the image-obsessed culture.
"I was fortunate that it was the time I emerged. It's different today, a lot harder.
"It changed when record companies became corporate, and the corporations merged. There were five labels where there used to be 15, then the five became three.
"Then all the stations got bought up. That meant the end of the unusual hits.
"Everything became what the format dictated. MTV had a lot to do with it, because how telegenic you were mattered as much as how well you played and sang."
