
With the steady decline at the box office, it's easy to talk about the reasons and to look at the failed business model and arrogance that many in Hollywood represent.
Even with a few films doing well, things aren't going to get better in the long run.
Now having said that, there is hope overall for show business, but it won't necessarily come from the broadcast and Hollywood media.
In the area of independent film there is a new focus on films that aren't so dark and cynical but are inspired from wanting to reveal new things and subjects. It's not enough to just tear down the old system and model, but it must be replaced by something new and fresh.
To see some of the new independent films and their topics at Cannes is encouraging to see. Even though the media likes to always cover those films that create the controversy, there a lot of others that are uplifting and inspirational.
One that comes to mind is the Jim Finn film "Interkosmos," which is a funny look at East Germany's alleged try in the 1970s to put human colonies on the moons of the planets Saturn and Jupiter. Another one called "Quietly on By" by Frank V. Ross, examines the loneliness of those in their 20s that still live at home.
Now with online uploading services you can create your own independent short films and have the world see them. The point isn't to only look at why things are changing and the down side, but to offer things that are alternatives and new ideas and inspirational films that deal with subjects that don't always go to the lowest common denominator to get the biggest audiences.
