Recently we talked of how 85% of people would prefer to watch movies at home. In a recent study conducted by Nielsen Analytics and the Movie Advisory Board found that even among the most avid theater-goers 36% of them would stay a home if they were given the option of simultaneous releases. In other words, if they release the film and the DVD at the same time.
Nielsen Analytics general manager and senior vp Larry Gerbrandt said "If that were the norm in the industry, you would potentially see a drop in boxoffice admissions by 36%, the theater business could not sustain that."
The study which was named "The Modern Movie Experience," searched out how digital technology and changing consumer attitudes are determining boxoffice returns. The end results are that simultaneous releases will cause a huge fall in consumers going to the cinema.
Another aspect of the study revealed that younger consumers don't have any commitment whatsoever to the theater as the chosen means to watch movies and thus are probably the biggest challenge that will be faced in the long run.
The survey was conducted with 2,500 big movie fans nationwide, with 7 out of 10 say that they went to a minimum of 10 movies during the last 12 months.
