Guideline, Inc., a provider of custom business research and analysis conducted a recent survey which showed that 85% of consumers usually preferred watching TV at home.
When including movies that people really want to see, 49 percent of those surveyed said they will wait for the movie to come out on DVD to rent or buy.
Guideline's Vice President of Marketing Frank Dudley said "Guideline's study affirms that DVD spending and consumption remain strong with more people enjoying movies from the comfort of their homes than in the movie theater, however, despite the many movie-viewing options available, a quarter of consumers still prefer the big screen."
The survey also revealed that men are more apt (28 percent) to go to the theater to watch the movie before it comes out on DVD, and women (31 percent) will wait for the movie to come out on DVD so they can rent it.
Those that wanted to see it at the theater simply say they like the big screen better. Another 46 percent, especially the younger respondents, said they did it because it was fun. Some simply liked the ambience, with eating popcorn and being able to watch without interruption.
With the continual debate concerning whether to release simultaneous and accelerated DVDs and movies, it was found that 56 percent said that the early release on DVD would have no effect on whether they would buy or rent the picture.
Since the past performance of movies has dictated how quickly DVDs are released, 20 percent felt that if a movie was released on DVD too soon, they would think it was a poor movie.
