In an almost psychotic obsession, Hollywood continues to attack those who come up with consumer-friendly technologies. We know about their newest assault with the legal war they recently declared on Cablevision Systems Corp.
Last week the company was sued by four studios and five cable networks attempting to block the introduction of their new service.
Studios like The Walt Disney Co. (DIS) and CBS Corp. (CBS-A) are arguing that the service breaks copyright agreements because it will allow subscribers to store their programs on the computer servers of the company. In other words, instead of storing on a home DVR, it will be stored on the company's servers.
Hopefully the company won't back down and will go through the battle. The customer's will still be in control of the content that is being recorded like the home DVR, so this is a bunch of threats and smoke screens.
This technology offers a wide range of additional options for content owners that Hollywood studios evidently have a hard time grasping because of their obsession with losing control.
Those of us that have followed technologies history in connection to the entertainment industry know that this is their typical response to all new technologies as they fought when VCRs and other technologies came out; yet they profited greately from its introduction.
They need to get new blood in their leadership and send the rest of them to early retirement. They are self-destructing and becoming yesterday's news and business model.
