What is the meaning of Paris Hilton? Is there any relevance to her and Hollywood? She became a celebrity without ever appearing in a motion picture or movie. The show she eventually appeared on wasn't made based upon an appeal or concept made through its writers, rather it was made solely upon the fan base created before the idea was ever thought of.
She sold her body and soul to get it, but that's a point for another day. What I'm getting at here is that Paris Hilton is not a creation of Hollywood, neither does she really even need it. What can they add to her that she already doesn't have?
Now let's carry this a step further and look at all the gossip tabloids, magazines and blogs. Does a celebrity become fodder for these outlets because they made a good movie? Are their names in the headlines primarily because of acting ability? You know its not.
It is because of their premeditated, marketed, outrageous behavior that they are put in the gossip columns.
Here's the thing: Does Hollywood have any value to a star anymore? How can a centralized, controlling organization be considered relevant in a increasingly decentralized world? Does anybody care who makes a movie? Do we get greater enjoyment and satisfaction watching something on YouTube or some other video upload site? Do we even prefer that to the slick, professional productions?
Hollywood keeps on fighting its copyright and distribution battles while a whole new entertainment world is growing up all around them. One day they'll look around and say they won the battle, the problem is they're in the wrong war.
