John P. Mello Jr. writing for E-Commerce Times reports that an anonymous studio executive revealed that major retailers aren't pushing for the movie industry to provide content for DVD kiosks, which offers consumers the ability to download and burn movies on the spot.
"We work with the retailers in any way we can, if their business is good, our business is good so we're completely incented to work with them. But whether or not DVD burning kiosks is a priority for them at this point, given all the other challenges that they're facing, that's their call.
"Right now, there is no date set, there's no retailer saying, 'We want to do this by such and such a time so help us get this done.' None of that is occurring at this point."
Retailers seemingly interested in movie burning kiosks are Wal-Mart (WMT), Best Buy (BBY) and Target (TGT).
Probably the major reason is the "rights" issue. Once that is settled, I couldn't imagine why retailers wouldn't be clamoring for this service to be offered in their stores, with the possibility of providing a ton of new retail space after the removal of physical DVDs and CDs from the shelf space.
I would think that this would be a major idea for retailers and they would be pushing hard for the entertainment industry to move quickly on it.
It's the only reason I was a little skeptical about the "anonymous" executive. Some of it makes no business sense.
