With the battle over which format will be chosen: Blu-ray or HD DVD, it is believed that Hollywood studios will be the ones who determine the winner.
Sony CEO and chairman Howard Stringer is touting Sony's greater storage capacity as the factor that will give it an edge over their rival Toshiba Corp.'s HD DVD.
He added that with "features such as multichannel audio, multiple language tracks, and interactivity are all increasing the amount of data that needs to be stored on discs, Stringer said, so studios will come to realize the 50GB dual-layer Blu-ray Disc suits their needs better than the 30GB dual-layer HD DVD format."
"I begin to sense in Blu-ray that the pendulum is swinging,it's swinging for one clear reason and that is, when you bring in new technology, do you go for cheaper, transitional [technology] or do you take a chance on future-proof, high technology that will keep you going for many, many years to come?"
"Toshiba in March began sales of HD DVD players for about 110,000 yen ($859) and said it aims to sell between 600,000 and 700,000 units by March 2007. The format has the support of Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and NEC Corp., while Blu-ray is backed by Samsung Electronics Co., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and others."
Who do you think will win this battle?
