Movielink, one of the companies that offers movie download on the Internet, may be close to taking care of one of the biggest problems that is holding it back from really becoming an effective service.
Up until this time Hollywood studios haven't made deals with anybody that won't agree to include protection through digital rights management software (DRM), which won't allow downloaded movies to be copied to DVD. The problem with that is that many people resented this and wouldn't make purchases that forced them to watch movies only on a computer platform.
In response Movielink has licensed technology from Sonic Solutions that offers the customer the ability to copy downloads onto DVDs. Basically what it does is to allow the DVD to be burned while maintaining DRM protection, which would prevent multiple copies from being made.
The service won't be functional until the license for the technology is made available later this year.
Jim Ramo, MovieLink chief executive said on Monday "We are hopeful this gets into the market in a big way in the next six months or so."
The last hurdle after that will be to obtain permission from the studio investors to allow the downloads with the new technology to take place.
