Fox has initiated a new network concept called Fox on Demand, which turns their local Fox stations into distributors of online primetime content. They are the first major network to do this.
Their current model, is going to work through offering ad supported video streaming. The first show, Prison Break, is already available, with four more shows about to be added.
Fox has had their own proprietary player created that will work using Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers. They are also geo-coding the content so that only those living in a certain area will be allowed to download the shows.
"The affiliate deal last spring laid the groundwork but really covers giving the network permission to repurpose its primetime programming. The preceding deal limited re-use to avoid having Fox use its broadcast shows on its cable networks. In the first year, Fox can repurpose 60 percent of the primetime shows, shifting to 80 percent in the next two years and 100 percent for the three following years. That deal splits 12.5 percent of revenues from downloads across the stations."
The nine owned and operated stations that are involved in the deal are located in Boston, Dallas, Tampa, Orlando, Birmingham, Greensboro, L.A., Boston, New York and Washington D.C.
