The new football film Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg, handily beat all its competition as it sold over twice as many tickets as its nearest competitor. It took in an estimated $17 million to take first place for the weekend. It averaged a respectable $5,838, opening in 2,917 theaters.
With the NFL pre-season on us and a healthy marketing campaign, Disney (DIS) looks like it will be rewarded for its efforts.
The rest of the films were so close together in sales, that the estimates for the weekend could change when the final numbers come in.
For now though, Talladega Nights remains in second place for the weekend, with an estimated $8 million for its fourth time around. It now has a total of $127.7 million overall, making it the second best comedy seller of the summer after Click, which took in $136 million.
Another comedy, Little Miss Sunshine, took up the third position with an estimated $7.5 million from showing in 1,430 sites. It averaged $5,245 a showing.
