William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, both 75, will be on hand in Las Vegas this weekend for a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the start of the series. They will sign autographs for their legion of fans. The crowd is expected to be in the thousands. It should be the largest gathering of what are known as "trekkies" ever.
One report mentions that part of the vision of Gene Rodenberry, was of a "future without racism, poverty, and environmental negligence." It was part of the reason that Star Trek had such a diverse, multi-ethnic cast from the beginning.
In interesting side of the story is that the original run of the show lasted from 1966 to 1969, when low ratings got it cancelled. It actually became more popular as a rerun, which spurred five more "Trek" series and ten films.
The owner of the Star Trek franchise, Paramount Studios, in a separate deal, is also going to offer Trek memorabilia for sale at Christie's New York auction house in October. The original uniforms of Captain Kirk and Spock will be part of the offerings.
