With its only deal with a TV broadcaster, Yahoo! (YHOO) is sending two chief executives to Australia to make sure things get done right. Markus Barnikel, chief of global sales and Bruno Fiorentini, the head of South American operations, will go to Australia next month to begin their jobs as chief sales officer and chief operating officer for Yahoo!7.
Yahoo is focusing its energy on this because its going to use the property as a testing ground for its various projects and products before they are launched globally.
Yahoo!7's chief executive, Ian Smith said, "It's true this is the only joint venture that Yahoo! has around the world of this nature - it's a true 50:50 financial joint venture with a media company. There is a sense we need to try different things and do a bit of experimentation. There's no point doing this sort of joint venture and then behaving exactly the same way as every other office around the world. So things like [online TV] program origination and the ReelTime venture are part of us being encouraged to take risks because that's really what will determine what's possible in the future."
This is a good move in my opinion as it takes their experiemental ideas and trials out of the major spotlight and gives them more opportunities to try things without every move being scrutinized.
