In the last year, video sharing sites have exploded in popularity, being led by sites like YouTube and Google Video. YouTube is now streaming over 100 million videos a day. In response the TV industry is trying to find a way to combine their offerings into a single package; trying to figure out a way to put their broadcasts, Internet movies and home videos together.
"French communications equipment maker Alcatel, working with Microsoft, showed at the IBC broadcasting convention in Amsterdam how it has integrated personal video channels into its Internet television system, bedded between the usual national, news and sports TV channels."
Andre Mika, director for current programming and production at Time Warner's (TWX) Internet business AOL added that amateur filmmakers are producing better videos than some people believe and generating a lot of interest as a result. He added that they are now even beginning to influence traditional TV production.
The bottom line in all of this is the quality of the story being told. Anyone that offers a story that people want to hear, will gain an audience.
I wonder what the various elements of the Hollywood elite will do as this reality is responded to by the general public looking for content that draws their interest. Now it can be created for very little and watched by hundreds of thousands.
