
Steve Irwin, popular conservationist and television celebrity died Monday from wounds inflicted by a stingray while filming a segment for a series called "Ocean's Deadliest."
John Stainton, a friend and colleague said "He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart." Stainton was aboard Irwin's boat at the time of the incident.
Emergency services were called from Cairns, while CPR was administered until the boat powered to meet the rescue helicopter. When the medical team arrived, they pronounced him dead a little while later.
Irwin, who was 44, is survived by his wife Terri, and daughter Bindi Sue, 8, and Son Bob, who will be three in December.
