Oprah has now officially expanded to the radio medium as her new channel Oprah & Friends started Monday on XM Satellite Radio (XMSR). It started on 10 a.m. Monday and will be a 24-hour lifestyle channel.
"Airing on XM channel 156, Oprah & Friends will feature original programming from Winfrey's Harpo Productions, including segments hosted by personalities from Winfrey's TV show and magazine and a weekly show with Winfrey and Gayle King. Many of the shows will be broadcast from a new radio studio in Harpo's Chicago production headquarters."
Oprah added that she has no specific expectations for the show. This refers to her deep disappointment with the failed project with Beloved, the Toni Morrison novel she attempted to adapt to the big screen. The results were far below expectations, and as a result Winfrey says she's learned to learned to throw things out there without any expectations and just see what happens.
One thing she won't have to deal with is the pressure that is on Howard Stern for his $500 million dollar deal over five years. Her deal was still not small as it is for $55 million over a three year period.
It'll be interesting to see if her fans cross over to the satellite radio medium. A lot of Stern's fans have resisted the move.
