The first episode of Star Trek was broadcast in the U.S. 40 years ago on Sept. 8, 1966. In celebration of the anniversary, there will be The Star Trek 40th Anniversary Gala Celebration and Conference, which will begin at Seattle's Space Needle, with music by, a Klingon band (who else?).
"Original series regulars Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols and George Takei are among the guests invited to a special three-day event starting Friday in Seattle. They will be joined by Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Majel Roddenberry, widow of series creator Gene Roddenberry."
This has always been an extraordinary story when you consider the show was only on for three years, but interest has never waned. There have been numerous spin-offs - The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise, 10 films with one more in the making, a bunch of novels, comic books and video games.
While the first show was on Sept. 8, 1966, the last show was aired in June of 1969.
Another event that fans are looking forward to is the upcoming auction of Star Trek memorabilia at Christies in New York in October.
