In an expected announcement, Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) revealed that it would start to offer movies on its iTunes online music store from the Walt disney Co.'s (DIS) Disney, Pixar, Touchstone and Miramax divisions.
Steve Jobs, Apple CEO and Disney board member said that there will be over 75 films immediately available from the Disney Company. The new releases will start at $12.99 if they are either pre-ordered or bought in the first week they are offered. After that they will be priced at $14.99. Regular titles will be sold at $9.99 each.
Included in the overall picture will be a device that will allow consumers to send the movies they've downloaded wirelessly to the television set to be watched; an important part of why sales haven't taken off yet for online movies. The device will also stream music, pictures, podcasts and TV shows to their home systems.
The device itself will be named iTV, and will be priced at $299. It is projected to be ready sometime in the first quarter of 2007.
Jobs said, "We think it completes the picture here. Now I could download content from iTunes. I could enjoy it on my computer, my
iPod and my big-screen television in the living room."
If Apple pulls this off, it should be a huge push for its stock, as it embeds itself into the entertainment world being offered through the Internet.
