The new movie The Prestige took top box office honors for the weekend, taking in an estimated $14.8 million. The movie, starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, tells the story of two competitive magicians who try to win the heart of a young woman.
In a little bit of a surprise, because of an expected stronger performance from Flags of our Fathers, Marting Scorsese's The Departed, remained in second place on its third time around. Its estimated take for the weekend was around $13.7 million.
Flags of our Fathers was the third place finisher of the week, opening up with $10.2 million. The average take per location was $5,437. With opening at only 1,856 theaters, the show did pretty well. Too bad it didn't have a wider distribution as it would have probably opened with a strong No. 1 performance.
The overall box office for the weekend was down quite a bit from last year.
