A Chicago-based auction house, acting on behalf the estate of former Jimmy Hendrix manager Michael Jeffery, sold the rights to some of his most famous songs; which include Purple Haze and Voodoo Chile, according to the BBC.
The family of Hendrix owns a company that says it will prove that the title and rights to the songs are owned by them. A spokesman for the Experience Hendrix company said: "Whoever bought this bought themselves the right to be a litigant."
Evidently they are going to contest the sale immediately, which brought in over $15 million for the seller.
Part of the issue is related to a court-ordered judgement against Ed Chalpin and his principal company PPX Enterprises, which owes Experience Hendrix $941,000 (including accrued interest), says the Hendrix official site. Chaplin is the one that has offered the songs and rights for auction.
Hendrix died in London in 1970 at the age of 27.
