With the curiosity factor and huge marketing push, Katie Couric couldn't go anywhere but down from her initial start at the CBS news desk when she pulled in 13.6 million viewers.
As of last week, her ratings have dived to 7.04 million viewers, in comparison to NBC's Nightly News, with 8.56 million, and ABC's World News, with 7.97 million, the Associated Press reports based on Nielsen Media Research.
CBS News President Sean McManus responded: "Where we were last week or even in the weeks to come is not as important as where we are next year and even the year after that, as we have said from the very beginning, we are focused on the long term and on making slow and steady progress, which we are doing."
While I like the long-term thinking of McManus, the issue at hand isn't that in my thoughts. The whole question that centers around Couric, and any of the evening news anchors and shows, is whether it's even the right thing to be working on any longer.
The great majority of young people don't consider it part of their experience anymore and really couldn't care less about it. They prefer
to consume news online.
Even if Couric, or someone else, created the best news show that has ever been made, people overall just aren't interested in the evening news anymore. Something extraordinary would have to happen to make this reality change in any way. I don't think it's going to happen. Do you?
