We always talk here about the changing media scene as the online world continually disrupts the existing media structure.
The trend of the day in media is mostly self-expression, especially in the online world. Along with that, people want to choose media as they want and when they want; creating their own content is the growth area in the internet world.
Most of you who read here all the time know all of this. What is another interesting point to make in the context of user-generated content and online communities is that many digital companies are seeing no reason to get together with the big, older media companies. This could prove a problem for the old media as they don't know how to enter the new online entertainment world.
At the MIPCOM annual audiovisual trade show in Cannes, France, this was the message being sent forth by a number of speakers and
panelists.
Those who have been formally called the "professionals," are now worried because basically anyone that has something to say and do, is now empowered to do it at very little cost; and some are doing it really good.
Some have created their own followings without the use of agents or large amounts of money. That's a revolution! That's what the big media companies are struggling to come up with an answer to.
The problem they have is that if they do come up with an answer, they must give up a lot of control that they haven't been willing to do yet. The other problem is that if they take the right steps, they can no longer be what they were. What's a big media company to do? It's a story we'll continually follow here at the bizofshowbiz.
