The comedy starring, well, Sacha Baron Cohen, otherwise known as "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," has been drastically cut back by Twentieth Century Fox for its opening weekend.
In one of the biggest cut backs in history, they have gone from the original 2000 + theaters, down to 800. This is spite of the many stunt promoted by the comedian all over the world.
"Our research showed it was soft in awareness," said Bruce Snyder, Fox's distribution chief.
Even with this happening, this is still probably a sure money-maker for Fox. They understand the new Hollywood and made the movie for a comparatively small $17 million.
With the opening theaters being in larger cities and college towns, it could average a high amount per theater, and give it some impetus to be requested by other theater owners that see the results.
It's not a bad idea, as "Snakes on a Plane" proved that having a lot of online buzz doesn't guarantee that the general public is getting the news. Fox has found out in their research that this is the current case with the "Borat" movie; hence the cutback in theater showings.
