Microsoft (MSFT) has announced that it's Xbox Live users will now be able to download movies and TV shows to their Xbox units. The service is set to go live on November 22. Reportedly they will have over a thousand hours of video ready for the launch date.
While the idea is intesting, and maybe even a little captivating, I don't see much value in just another way to download the same stuff you see on TV all the time.
To be a cool thing, I think they should have had some type of unique content that would be offered with the service, rather than thinking
like an old media company.
There are tons of things that could have been offered to make this really resonate with its core user; maybe they'll offer those types of things in the future.
Something else they'll have to do soon if they are going to pursue this agressively, is to increase the small size of its hard drive, as now it's only 20 gigabytes, with only around 15 gigabytes available on the top end.
This is an obvious attempt to get young males to engage with TV again, as Microsoft has lined up partners like MTV, CBS, Warner Bros., Paramount, Turner and UFC. I just don't see this being much of a boost, as I said, because it's simply made to watch the TV shows that those using the Xbox prefer not to.
