With the new prime-time TV season over a month along, the results, for some, have been surprising. Some of the shows with the big names failed almost immediately, while other shows that there were no known actors on, have thrived.
One article I read talks about this being a new trend that has emerged, along with new stars. Unfortunately, this is the same old story we always hear when people act surprised because something that was felt to be the big winner by TV studios, ends up being a loser quick.
For example, why do we still hear writers talk about how shocked they are when actors that are well known to the public bomb on television or the movies? This is nothing new at all; it has happened from the
beginning of film.
The reason is always connected to the story being told - there is simply nothing else to it. It has to do with the screen writer and how they tell the story and the quality of the story itself.
Ugly Betty: Surprise Success
This still shows how far Hollywood is out of touch with normal people. What they think of as ingenious or a can't miss hit, is many times completely rejected by consumers. Now this could happen in any industry, but Hollywood for some reason never seems to get it. They are always surprised when a show starring a big-name actor bombs time afte time. Then they do it again and are surprised again.
It's never an actor or star that makes a show, but it's a show that makes a star. That's why when you look at an actor's credits, they have some great triumphs, but just as many, and usually more, misses. It's all in picking the right movie or show to act in.
Studios need to understand that celebrities offer nothing except that they will get someone to take a look at least once. That's not a good reason to pay them far more than they should, thinking that it's them that make the success happen. I'm starting to wonder if they'll ever learn this.
