The U.S. Copyright Office has ruled that copying DVDs to iPods will still not be legally allowed as it rejected offering an exemption for consumers.
On the other hand, the "Office" did make some other exemptions that will aid some in what they're doing. Film professors will be allowed to copy clips from DVDs for educational purpose according to the Copyright Office ruling.
Hollywood studios even fought this claiming that educators could use videotapes or other sources that didn't involve copy protections. The professors fought back saying that the quality of videotapes were poor and lacke the original dimentions and color preserved by DVDs. The end purpose being taking older material and comparing it with newer and seeing how the industry has progressed and grown through the years.
Fred von Lohmann, an attorney with the civil-liberties group Electronic Frontier Foundation said: "I am very encouraged by the fact that the Copyright Office is willing to recognize exemptions for archivists, cell phone recyclers and computer security experts, frankly I'm surprised and pleased they were granted."
