After being taken private by a group of private equity firms, VNU, the largest marketing and research company in the world, has confirmed that it's put its huge reorganization plan into motion.
I
t was rumored to be reducing its global workforce by 10%, and has confirmed that as fact. The total reduction in workers will be about 4,000.
Another big move was to reduce drastically its trade publication business, already selling it European trade publications to a European private equity group.
The purpose in all of it was to get back to its core business of focusing on expanding the Nielsen media research arm of the company, and making it the heart of the business.
The company said that the savings from the moves will be invested in developing and marketing new Nielsen products. The four key services the company will be focusing on are increasing the ability to measure the use of personal video devices (DVRs); a more effective marketing tool that integrates consumer, retail and media data; creating a service that will help retailers better measure their loyalty initiatives; and new digital platforms for its magazines.
