The popular Twentieth Century Fox (NWS) Alien franchise is teaming up with Video game software and hardware developer Sega Europe Ltd. to develop games for its next generation gaming consoles.
In a joint statement the two companies said that there will be a role playing game, along with a first-person shooter game in the works. They are scheduled for release in 2009.
Sega does have a wide reach as it develops title for the big three game console companies PlayStation 3 (SNE), Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii.
Simon Jeffery, president and chief operating officer of Sega America, thinks that the high profile and popularity of Alien should translate into a great gaming experience. There is potential here, but there haven't been a lot of games that have crossed over and become hits on both platforms.
It will be enough for the hard core gamers and Alien fans to give it a try, but obviously it will have to deliver something unique to make it a real hit. I think the one positive thing is that they did choose a franchise that will definitely have appeal to the gaming crowd. It's up to Sega to create something that will buck the trend and turn it into something compelling and buzzworthy.
To me they have a better chance with the role playing gaming experience, than they do with the first-person shooter side of it.
