The fruitless battle to maintain what they were in the past, is already over for traditional and cable TV networks. The future is already upon us, and will continue to unfold day-by-day. It's now the days of fragmentation and deeper and wider niches for everybody.
What about that box with a screen in your living room, and other places in the house? It'll still be there, but the origin of content is going be coming from everywhere; it's already starting to.
An interesting thing is that the televisions in our houses aren't really going to become less relevant, they're going to be even more important to our everyday experience. It's just not going to be important anymore who's providing the content. We want what we want, when we want it. Only the Internet as a delivery system will be able to provide that type of experience.
The TV set will still be the preferred method of consuming media in the future, that's not going to change. What's coming into that set though will include every possible thing that could interest a human being. It's really going to be a consumer's market for years to come, as content creators and providers fight for niche markets all over the world.
As Steve Rubel says, "My own feeling is that both TV and the Internet will remain popular. One will not replace the other. From a pure viewing experience, big screen TVs clearly provide a more superior experience to watching video on a computer or a mobile device - particularly with the rise of HDTV. However, more and more TVs are going to connect to the Internet directly via specialized devices like Apple’s ITV in addition to your cable or satellite box. With this, your TV open up to thousands of content creators, pro and amateur."
While the picture is getting clearer all the time concerning what the future of the TV set and media will be, there is still that area of content creators that will include "amateur" artists, which will still be a tremendous force that promises that nothing will be the same again. It's going to continue to be an extraordinary ride.
