In a lawsuit filed by Time Warner (TWX) Cable against its competitor DirecTV Group (DTV), they allege that the satellite tv service put out ads that deceived consumers into believing that could only watch some specific football programming throught the DirecTV service.
The lawsuit says that DirecTV issued "blatantly false" newspaper ads in a number of cities across the country saying that the local games couldn't be viewed by the fans if they weren't DirecTv customers.
The suit said, "These false ads were obviously targeted at markets where DirecTV believes that loyalty to the local football team will drive consumer purchasing decisions."
One of the ads that especially drew Time Warner's ire was offered in the New York
Post and New York Newsday on November 23, which asserted that the upcoming game on December 30 between the New York Gians and Washington Redskins, would only be available through DirecTV, and only could be watched if they subscribed to their service. It's grating to them because there are 4.4 million cable subscribers in New York.
