With "American Idol" destroying everything in its path, some networks are responding by going defensive with some of the shows they believe have a long-term chance at success.
ABC (DIS), for example, is switching some of the shows competing with "Idol" to different time periods. They've taken "The Knights of Prosperity" and "According to Jim" and reversed their slots. "George Lopez" will now be the 8 p.m. starter for the network and then "Prosperity" will follow at 8:30 p.m.
The shows that will be opposite "Idol" will be "Jim" a 9 p.m. and the debut of "In Case of Emergency" will be offered next at 9:30 p.m.
"American Idol" so dominates the night that neither "Prosperity" or "Emergency" could garner a 2.0 rating. There is an occasional two-hour "Idol" on Wednesday nights, but for the most part it will be for an hour, starting at 9 p.m.
ABC has already changed "Lost" to a 10 p.m. slot, which even without "Idol" has lost 20 percent of its viewers.
