In a move to further focus and specialize, CBS Corp. (CBS-A) announced that it has built a separate division to center in on its expanding DVD business. The new unit will be called CBS Home Entertainment.
It's overall strategy will be to release DVDs of their current programs, older fare from their library and also releases from Showtime Video.
"DVD sales for television series continue to grow, and a dedicated unit in this area puts us in a better position to exploit more of the vast programming assets in this
company, to focus on worldwide distribution opportunities, and to grow our revenue even further, said Bob Madden, president and chief operating officer of CBS Television Distribution.
Home Entertainment will also increase the number of new releases in 2007 by over 20 percent.
CBS said they have also created another division called CBS Consumer Products, whose purpose will be to search to increase the companies revenue streams and brand awareness. It will be part of the CBS Entertainment division.
The move toward a separate unit for zeroing in on their DVD business is a good idea. The combination of TV programming and DVD sales continue to flourish when some thought that the market was too crowded. A lot of the CBS library hasn't been touched at all.
That, along with baby boomers reaching the age of retirement for the first time, may offer a continuous stream of income for those longing to recall the nostalgic moments of their youth. This should be a burgeoning market for quite a while.
