James Cameron started working on the Science Fiction action screenplay for "Avatar" 11 years ago, when he wrote an 80 page summary of what he wanted.
The movie, which will be shot in the new digital 3-D format so that it can be released in 3-D, will start shooting in April with virtual photography. The live-action part of the project will be start shooting in August. The release is set for the summer of 2009, according to Fox Filmed Entertainment.
"I've been the busiest unemployed director in Hollywood," he said. "We're going to blow you to the back wall of the theater in a way you haven't seen for a long time. My goal is to rekindle those amazing mystical moments my generation felt when we first saw '2001: A Space Odyssey,' or the next generation's 'Star Wars.' It took me 10 years to find something hard enough to be interesting."
Cameron says that the finished product should be around 60 percent CG elements and 40 percent live action. He wants the CG quality that was in "Lord of the Rings" to be in this film. One of the things he's done to ensure this is to enlist "Rings" director Peter Jackson's Weta Digital company in New Zealand to handle parts of the creation.
The lead role for the film was given to Australian actor Sam Worthington, who starred in "Somersault" and "Dirty Deeds."
To play the love interest of the main character Jack Sully, Cameron has enlisted Zoe Saldana who has been in "The Terminal" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."
The film will cost around $190 million to make, and Cameron believes it has the potential to be a big hit. As a result he signed on both actors to appear if there are sequels to the movie. Cameron added that if the movie is financially successful, there will definitely be more to come.
