NBC Universal (GE) has decided the increasingly crowed field of the horror genre by launching a new channel catering exclusively to that niche content.
They follow Comcast (CMCSA) which launched a similar channel last year called "FearNet," which is only distributed through VOD/broadband. AOL Video also has a large pool of horror movies it broadcasts.
With the NBC Universal channel to be called "Chiller," the company is offering across several different platforms. They'll offer it as a VOD package, broadband Web site and standard and HD cable channel.
Jeff Gaspin, president, NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, Digital Content and Cross Network Strategy said "We continually look at our options for launching new networks. Horror is one of the most reliably successful genres in entertainment today, and Chiller seems like a well-timed addition to our portfolio."
The new channel is already being carried by DirecTV (DTV) and is using mostly old content from NBC Universal. Some of the titles included will be Tales From the Crypt and Twin Peaks from television and The Birds, The Shining and Psycho from their movie inventory.
It's scheduled to begin on March 1.
