For the first time in about a year, Oprah Winfrey chose a book for her club, choosing to present the autobiography of Sidney Poitier called, "The Measure of a Man" as the choice.
Winfrey said that it's taken her so long to choose because her priority was to do research on the curriculum for the school she opened for disadvantaged girls in South Africa. As a result, she wasn't able to take the time to read, but hinted that
there will be more to come now that her school has opened.
Concerning the book which was published in 2000, Oprah said on her show that "He writes really candidly and passionately about his childhood, his family, relationships and his extraordinary career. It really is about what makes character, what makes you be who you are. He is the measure of one of the greatest men I think who has ever been on our planet."
Poitier was the first black actor to win the Oscar for best actor, for his role in the 1964 film "Lilies of the Field." He has also was awarded with an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement.
At the time of Winfrey's selection of the book for the club, "The Measure of a Man" ranked 288,958 on Amazon.com, as usual with Winfrey's picks, this book climbed to the top 5 in a matter of a view hours after the announcement.
