The top film awards in Spain were good to Penelope Cruz she won the Best Actress award for her role in the film "Volver." Hoping to gain momentum for the Oscars, Cruz is the first nominee in the best actress category from Spain. The movie also won for best movie and director.
Fighing tears, she especially thanked director Pedro Almodovar for what she called "one of the best experiences of her life." Almodovar also won for best director for "Volver" but didn't attend the ceremonies, possibly from past perceived grievances he's had with the Spanish Film Academy from which he resigned over differences in the way films at the competition were being judged.
Mexican director Guillermo del Toro also took in a lot of prizes as he won seven awards at the ceremony, which included best script and best new actress Ivana Bacquero in "Pans Labyrinth." The film was also a pick that beat out "Volver" to represent the best foreign language films at the Oscars.
Spanish speaking Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn in "Lord of the Rings," wasn't able to come away with a prize, as Juan Diego won for the best leading actor in "Vete de Mi." Mortensen played "Alariste" in a flim about the Spanish hero. It was the most expensive film made in Spain costing $28 million. It did come away with three awards though.
For the best film in the European category, the British film "The Queen" won, beating out Woody Allen's "Scoop."
