The AMC theater chain, owned by AMC Entertainment Inc., announced that it was offering teachers who want to see "Freedom Writers" a free ticket to the show starting on February 1. Those interested must teach between the grades of kindergarten through 12th and provide school identification or pay stub.
The "Freedom Writers" film, which stars Hilary Swank, was released three weeks ago and focuses on a true story concerning an English teacher who attempts to help high school students from a Long Beach California high school to overcome racial intolerance.
Paramount (VIA-B) and AMC said that it's something they wanted to do to honor teachers. "We hope this will help express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for all that they do, often with very little 'thanks' in return," AMC said in a news
release. They took similar action with the spelling-bee movie "Akeelah and the Bee," when they offered about 10,000 free tickets as well.
So far "Freedom Writers" has taken in $26.5 million at the box office while being shown at 2,286 locations. Last week it still held onto fifth place, doing better than some critics predicted.
