Fox (NWS) has announced that this will be the final run of The O.C. starting with new episodes on Thursday, and finishing up with the final episode on Feb. 22.
"The O.C. season four finale will also be the series finale. This feels like the best time to bring the show to its close," O.C. creator and executive producer Josh Schwartz said in a statement. "Thanks to the hard work of our cast, crew and writers, we have enjoyed our best season yet, and what better time to go out
than creatively on top."
The show started off strong with 8.4 million people tuning in for the first seven weeks it was aired. It finished even stronger in the second half of the first season garnering a 9.7 million audience. The young stars of the show were a hit.
Fox decided to use the show as a test for trying some different time slots and dates. The show went quickly downhill in viewership ever since.
It does have a strong core fan base, and fans have been actively pursuing the idea for another network to pick up the show next year. Even if that were to happen, it is highly unlikely that the current actors on the show would stay on. Still the fact that it's being pursued and talked about shows the way people have an increasing say in the potential future of shows.
