Universal Pictures is in negotiations with Rob Cohen to take over directing their third installment of the "Mummy" series. He would take over for Stephen Sommers who directed the first two "Mummy" films which were released in 1999 and 2001; they took in a total of $849 million worldwide.
Cohen has directed two other films for Universal, The Fast and the Furious" and "The Skulls." Other movies he's directed are "XXX" and "Stealth."
Stars of the first two offerings, Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, haven't been landed for the third movie, although there have been talks to get them to take up there roles again.
Producers for "Mummy 3," including Sommers and his Sommers Co. partner Bob Ducsay, will also be Sean Daniel and Jim Jacks. Scripting the show are Miles Miller and Alfred Gough.
The project has been slated for a 2008 release.
